FAQ

When did you start crocheting? – I first picked up a crochet hook when I was about 5 – my Nan was a keen knitter and also crocheted a bit, so taught me to do the Chain stitch. I would sit there for ages making huge chains. It never in a million years occurred to me that I could make anything other then chains! I started crocheting seriously many years later in 2008 after seeing some super cute amigurumi on sites like Craftster.org. I thought the pieces I saw were so tiny and clever – I was instantly determined to teach myself how to make them too. I learnt to crochet mainly through watching videos on YouTube.

My first ever crochet piece

What was the first thing you crocheted? – The first finished ‘piece’ I made was a little tomato amigurumi pincushion – I was so pleased with him, although looking at him now I can see so many flaws and mistakes. For instance – I was crocheting ‘inside out’ and though only one loop for many months after initially learning to crochet! I look at him now and realise how much of an improvement I have made with my crochet work 🙂

What are your favourite things to make? – For the longest time I crocheted amigurumi exclusively, then after a few years I moved on to making things like blankets and hats. These days I like to make a mixture of things, including my much loved amigurumi, blankets, hats, cushions, bags and clothing. I have dabbled in almost every aspect of crocheting, including crocheting for my ever growing Blythe doll collection. I wouldn’t say I have a favourite – I can never stick to one area for long 🙂

What yarns do you use for your work? Where can I buy them? – I almost always use acrylic Double Knit (8 Ply) yarns – your know, the cheap stuff! Yes, I am a cheap hooker lol 😛 I use this for all my projects, from amigurumi to blankets, Blythe hats to bags. I mainly purchase my yarns from my local town centre here in Basildon – we are lucky that we have many shops that stock yarns (e.g. – Wilkinsons, QD Stores, Linen Direct, PoundStretchers, Hobbycraft, various Pound Stores and market stalls). There is also a couple of independent yarn shops near Basildon, one in Southend called Gades, and also in nearby Benfleet, called Bodkins. In recent times I have also taken to buying a lot of my bulk yarn from online retailers like Wool Warehouse, Love Knitting/Love Crocheting and Yarn Paradise. Plus eBay is always an option <3

Do you sell your stuff/take custom orders? – Yes I do sell my crochet work and also take on custom orders! I have an Etsy shop for both my general crocheting and patterns called EssHaych, and for my Blythe doll makes too, called Eriko’s Emporium. If you would like me to make you something special you are more than welcome to contact me at either one of my Etsy stores, my social media outlets or through this site – and I will be happy to work with you <3

What else do you like doing, apart from crocheting? – I enjoy music, and love going to concerts. I try to pack a few in a year when I can, my favourite bands being rock bands like The Darkness, Muse, My Chemical Romance, Green Day and Avenged Sevenfold. I also have a soft spot for Lady Gaga. I like to read a lot – my favourite books being Sci-Fi and weird stories. My favourite authors are Phillip K Dick, Chuck Palahniuk and Haruki Murakami. I also love all aspects of Japanese culture and language, and was lucky enough in 2016 to visit Tokyo for the first time after many years of planning. I get a lot of my crochet inspiration from Japanese lifestyle, artists and crafts.

I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit more about me! If you have any FAQ questions for this page please don’t hesitate to comment below and I will answer them <3
